Benefits of Honey & Exercise January 23 2019, 0 Comments

Right after you've put yourself through the exhilarating exertion of a workout, you need to refuel your body. You should put something into it that will start repairing muscle damage and help you recover in general. You've most likely heard that carbs and protein is optimal. When examining the benefits honey has to offer, you'd think it was tailor-made by nature to be your go-to pre/post-workout food. Honey has a variety of benefits: maintains blood sugar levels, assists with muscle recovery, offers antioxidant benefits, & fits into a raw food diet, just to name a few.

Maintains Blood Sugar Levels:

Depending on how intense your workout was and whether you properly fueled up beforehand, your blood sugar can drop dangerously low. Having a tablespoon or two of honey after a workout is an effective way to keep your blood sugar up. Even if you don't enter the danger zone, honey will refuel your body, giving you energy for whatever you need to do next.

Helps With Recovery:

Muscle growth and recovery go hand in hand, and they're both enhanced by getting some post-workout nutrition. The 30 to 45 minutes after you work out is called the anabolic phase, the time when your body goes to work to build muscle and recover. It's an ideal time to reload your system's energy supplies. Carbohydrates and protein are both useful for this purpose and even more effective when used together. Added to a protein shake and acting as the carb component, honey can help your body to make the most of the anabolic window of muscle building and repair that starts when your workout ends.

Offers Antioxidant Benefits:

As you challenge your body during a workout, you're doing more than burning up fuel. You're also leaving your body vulnerable to the effects of oxidation, which can affect all your body tissues as well as your immune system. Honey is useful as a post-workout supplement because it contains antioxidants. Dark honey in particular may contain almost as many antioxidants as spinach and garlic. So indulging in a dose of honey after a workout can help keep your immune system working to maintain the health of your muscles and the rest of your body.

Fits Into a Raw-Food Diet:

Honey is recommended by sports dietitians and personal trainers for a healthy, quick shot of energy. Honey is loaded with vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants and enzymes, all good for you and vital for optimal health, but only when it's in its unprocessed form. The method for processing honey leaches the nutrition out, reducing or, in some cases, eliminating the favorable effects you're relying on honey to provide. When you use honey after a workout for the benefits listed here, make sure you're eating raw honey.

The Science:

The problem with many post-workout carbohydrates is the hypoglycemia cycle. Ingest a simple carbohydrate for refueling and it's quickly digested & absorbed. This results in a spike in blood sugar followed by a quick and potentially dangerous drop. Honey may be one of the best carbohydrates to refuel with to avoid this hypoglycemia effect.

Honey After Exercise:

In a review in the "Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition" by Dr. Richard Kreider, chair of the Department of Health, Human Performance & Recreation at Baylor University, the effectiveness of honey after a workout is examined. Kreider and colleagues explain that honey is an effective means of post-workout recovery. In addition, honey does not result in a state of hypoglycemia. Instead, it can maintain blood glucose more effectively than sucrose or maltodextrin.

Honey has a lower glycemic index than other sugars, which may make it superior for carbohydrate recovery. The glycemic index is a method of rating foods based on their effect on your blood glucose. The scale extends from zero to 100, with the higher numbers leading to a greater spike in glucose levels. Honey scores around a 43, making it a medium-glycemic food. It attenuates the response of your blood glucose, leading to a longer and more sustainable rise in blood sugar over time.

Post-workout carbohydrate ingestion is an important part of recovery. During exercise, your blood glucose levels can drop because your muscles use available glucose for energy. You must ingest carbohydrates after your workout to replenish your blood glucose. In addition, during recovery, your muscles take in extra blood glucose to replenish their internal stores of glucose, or muscle glycogen. During recovery, your muscles also compensate by increasing their stores for your next workout. If blood glucose is unavailable to your muscles at this time, your body cannot recover adequately.

Honey Benefits Before & During Exercise:

Honey may also be useful before and during your workout. If you eat honey before exercise, you allow for a slow and steady release of glucose into the blood. This can keep your body from using its stored muscle glycogen as fuel. Sparing muscle glycogen can keep fatigue at bay. During your workout, honey may also be effective at increasing the power output of your muscles, improving your performance.

*Chronic Strength Products handcrafted using natural, unprocessed, raw honey:

Our Peanut Butter Protein Truffles pack the most honey out of all of our products vs. the Protein Crumble which has less honey in total per serving. The protein Granola would contain the least amount of honey, while the Protein Cookie Dough's & Protein Truffles made with dates (Vanilla, Fudge Brownie, Pumpkin Pie, Key Lime Pie, Mint Chocolate) do NOT contain any honey. Your best option for a pre/post workout snack would be our Peanut Butter Protein Truffles or Protein Crumble.

Friday Food Finds – Chronic Strength Protein Snacks Review

Happy Friday friends! Have you ever come across a company whose products and mission immediately clicked with you? This happened to me earlier this year when I came across Chronic Strength on social media. Today, I’m sharing a review for some of my favorite healthy treats from Chronic Strength’s protein kitchen!

Chronic Strength is a health and fitness conscious company based out of South Florida that specializes in healthy artisan protein snacks. Stephanie Polk, the founder and owner is very passionate and dedicated to lifting and living a healthy lifestyle. Throughout years of living a healthy and fit lifestyle, she began to noticed a lack of healthy protein snacks on the market. She decided to start experimenting in the kitchen and create her own protein treats using fresh, wholesome, organic, gluten free, nutritional ingredients and super foods, ingredients that she felt passionate about.

All of their artisan snacks are made fresh to order and ship out in 2-3 days! There are no preservatives so it’s best to keep all of your snacks refrigerated upon receipt to sustain maximum freshness.

Let’s get started!

Pumpkin Pie Protein Cookie Dough

Chronic Strength, Pumpkin Pie Protein Cookie Dough

The Pumpkin Pie cookie dough is a Limited Edition flavor that contains Greek yogurt chips! Yes, you can eat this raw or use it to make cookies. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spoon out some cookie dough and form into the size cookie you desire. Place them onto a pan lined with parchment paper and bake for about 8-10 minutes until the tops are slightly golden. I highly encourage eating your cookies fresh out of the oven! The Greek yogurt chips are so melty and delicious! Just try not to eat the whole batch at once!

Ingredients: Fresh medjool dates, vanilla whey & casein proteins, unsalted pecans, Cinnamon, Pumpkin Pie spice, pumpkin spice extract, & filtered water

Pumpkin Pie Protein Truffles(Seasonal Flavor)

Chronic Strength, Pumpkin Pie Protein Truffles

Anyone who follows my blog knows that pumpkin is my all time favorite! These truffles taste like rolled up pumpkin pie filling. Gluten-free, grain-free, egg free and no refined sugars! The only sugar you will consume is the natural sugar found in the dates. Dessert doesn’t get much better than that!

Ingredients: Fresh medjool dates, vanilla whey & casein proteins, Cinnamon, Pumpkin Pie spice, unsalted walnuts, & filtered water

Peppermint Protein Truffles

Who would have guessed these innocent looking peppermint truffles are actually protein packed bites of pure bliss! These dark chocolate peppermint protein truffles will help satisfy and curb your sweet tooth! Perfect fuel for pre or post workout or a healthy dessert. The peppermint is hands down my favorite and reminds me of those minty Girl Scout cookies! Try dipping your truffles in a White Chocolate Mint protein dip! It takes them to a whole new level!

Ingredients: Fresh medjool dates, whey & casein proteins, unsalted walnuts, filtered water & peppermint oil

Double Chocolate Chip Protein Cookie Dough

The Double Chocolate Chip Protein Cookie dough was the perfect topping for my Triple Chocolate ice cream! My favorite way to enjoy this flavor is to grab a spoon and dig in! No shame in my game and no such thing as too much chocolate in your life!

Ingredients: Fresh medjool dates, unsalted pecans, whey & casein protein blend & organic dark chocolate stevia sweetened chips

With the holidays right around the corner, why not treat yourself or that fitness foodie in your life to some protein goodies! In addition to the truffles and cookie dough, Chronic Strength also has Protein Granola, Protein Crumbles and other flavors of cookie dough and truffles to choose from! One Response to Friday Food Finds – Chronic Strength Protein Snacks Review

  1. I really love the Chronic Strength mission – what a great company! You’re the one who introduced me to them; but I feel guilty to admit I haven’t yet tried their products (eek, sorry). Your reviews really remind me that I need to try the products soon; and YES YES YES with the ice cream/chocolate treat featuring the Chronic Strength truffle – you are awesome, as always. If I could create my own cookie dough flavor = White Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookie Dough (not innovative, but so delicious), gluten-free of course. HAPPY FRIDAY! xo

Supplement Review: Artisan Protein Snacks by Chronic Strength

By Matt Samansky
Supplement Review Editor

Spring has sprung…and so has the elastic on my jeans.  It’s finally time to shed the puffy jackets along with the excess fat from those long winter months. Diet programs commence and, let’s be honest, they usually fail. According to a study conducted by, 73% of people ditch their fitness aspirations before reaching their goal. Why is this? There are many reasons but I personally attribute the lack of perseverance to the sudden lifestyle change. When people dive straight into a nutrition program, they leave little or no room for cheating – a word that mirrors that of a swear and an action that yields physical and emotional guilt.

What if you could purchase a product that satisfies the sweet tooth without the guilt of cheating on your diet? Well, look no further than Chronic Strength’s healthy protein treats.

Stephanie Polk developed Chronic Strength as a healthy alternative to the sugary snacks found in the central aisles of the grocery store. Stephanie would spend hours in the kitchen experimenting with fresh, wholesome, organic, gluten free, nutritious ingredients and super foods before finally finding the perfect recipe.

First up on the Chronic Strength menu is their Protein Crumble. Available in banana, peanut butter, dark chocolate, and PB&J flavors, this is a great snack to eat pre-workout, post-workout, or in between meals. I enjoy using the crumble as a breakfast cereal substitute in a bowl of milk. The 1 oz. serving size yields 8g of fat, 11g of carbohydrate, 6g of protein, and 140 total calories.

If a crunch is what you seek, look no further than Chronic Strength’s protein granola in maple cranberry and pumpkin spice varieties. Similarly to the crumble, this treat can be mixed into parfaits or yogurt cups. Macros for 1 oz. include 5g of fat, 17g of carbohydrate, 4g of protein, and 125 total calories.

My personal favorite of the Chronic Strength lineup is the protein truffles. Available in cacao, chocolate peppermint, fudge brownie, and peanut butter – 1 truffle contains 6g of fat, 11g of carbohydrate, 5g protein, and 120 calories.

And finally, Chronic Strength has solved one of life’s dilemmas by creating a guilt free chocolate chip cookie dough! I’ll be honest, I fully intended on using the cookie dough to bake some high protein chocolate chip cookies. Unfortunately, it didn’t last very long. I popped the lid off and ate the dough right out of the container. Sure, I missed out on some fresh baked cookies, but I wasn’t complaining. One tablespoon of the dough yields 2.3g of fat, 9g of carbohydrate, 6g of protein, and 76 total calories.

Quality of Ingredients: Natural peanut butter, whey/casein protein, oats, honey, puffed quinoa, raw cacao, chia seeds, and cinnamon are just a few of the organic, gluten-free, egg-free ingredients Stephanie utilizes to bake her high protein treats. Each and every item available is free of artificial flavors and dyes to provide the cleanest way to cheat on any diet. Chronic Strength snack do include nuts, seeds, and other ingredients that one might be allergic to, so just make sure to read the label! 34/34.

Price: Baking with real food can be expensive and the goal of a business is to make a profit. So from a business standpoint, I understand the high price of the products. Having said that, there are (at most) 15 servings of product per container and serving suggestions are not proportionally conducive. I could realistically eat an entire package of granola in one sitting. This would be a $15 meal that would not nearly satiate my appetite. Factor in shipping and we’re talking about a $20 snack gone in under 10 minutes. 25/33.

Taste: Chronic Strength’s protein snacks are just that; snacks. They are not supplements, so I have replaced the “effectiveness” category for one more appropriate to the product. Having said that, they are downright delicious. I have sampled everything Chronic Strength has to offer and I can wholeheartedly declare the protein truffles to be my favorite. Soft, dense, and flavorful, I can’t stop at just one. I ate the entire container of cookie dough in one sitting and there is no protein aftertaste lingering from any of the foods. One thing I must say is that the cacao truffles, however, are unsweetened and sacrifice flavor. 30/33.

Overall: Chronic Strength delivers delicious and nutritious snacks to the health conscious individual. I highly recommend these treats for one’s own personal use taste or even as a gift for a certain recent college graduate/supplement review editor…(cough). 89/100.

What protein packed food should I tackle next? Shoot me a Facebook post, tweet, email, etc. and let me know!
